Study in the Morning, Freelance at Night: A Day in My Life
Balancing the demands of university life with freelancing can feel like running two parallel lives. During the day, I’m a student navigating lectures, deadlines, and group projects. By night, I’m a freelancer working with clients from different time zones, editing drafts, and managing deliverables.
It’s a unique rhythm—not always easy, but definitely rewarding. Here’s a look into a typical day in my life and how I make it all work (most days!).
☀️ 7:30 AM – The Calm Before the Campus Chaos
My day starts early, mostly because I like having a slow, quiet morning. I wake up around 7:30 AM, make my bed (yes, it actually makes a difference), and go through a short morning routine—stretching, a quick meditation, and coffee.
Before diving into classes, I open Notion and review my daily dashboard. It lists:
-
Today’s classes
-
Study sessions or assignment deadlines
-
Any freelance tasks due later
That 10-minute planning session sets the tone for my day.
🎓 9:00 AM – Lectures, Notes, and Campus Life
From 9 AM to around 2 PM, it’s full-on student mode. Whether I’m attending lectures online or on campus, I try to stay fully present. I take class notes in Notion, organized by course and week. If I’m short on time, I’ll jot down quick thoughts in Google Keep and sort them later.
On days with gaps between classes, I usually:
-
Head to the library for focused study
-
Catch up on reading
-
Prep client work outlines (if it’s a light academic day)
Snacks and hydration? Non-negotiable.
🧠 3:00 PM – Brain Break & Light Admin Work
Post-class hours are tricky—my brain’s usually fried. So I give myself a break. Sometimes I go for a walk, hit the gym, or just scroll mindlessly for 15–20 minutes (yes, it happens!).
After recharging, I tackle light tasks:
-
Checking emails
-
Responding to freelance client messages
-
Updating my task list in Notion
-
Scheduling meetings if needed
This “in-between” phase is perfect for admin tasks that don’t require deep focus.
💻 5:00 PM – Freelance Mode Activated
Once the academic part of the day winds down, I switch into freelancer mode.
Depending on the day, I work on:
-
Writing content or editing client projects
-
Creating graphics or managing social posts
-
Delivering project updates
-
Attending quick client calls (mostly via Zoom or Meet)
I typically freelance from 5 PM to around 9 PM, with breaks in between. Using a time-blocking strategy on Google Calendar helps me stay on track and avoid burnout.
Pro tip: I use a Pomodoro timer to stay focused—25 minutes of work, 5 minutes break. It’s a game-changer.
🌙 9:30 PM – Wrap-Up & Wind-Down
I try not to work past 9:30 PM unless absolutely necessary. At this point, I’ll review what I accomplished, update my Notion boards, and prep tomorrow’s to-do list.
Nighttime rituals help me relax and sleep better:
-
Light stretching or a walk
-
Reading (fiction or something non-work-related)
-
Phone off by 11 PM (okay, most nights…)
🔄 How I Make It Work (Most of the Time)
Balancing both lives isn’t always smooth. But a few habits keep me grounded:
-
Prioritize daily: I focus on 3 main tasks per day (academic + freelance combined).
-
Say no when needed: I’ve learned not to overcommit—even if the client pays well.
-
Use tools smartly: Notion for planning, Google Keep for quick notes, and Google Calendar for blocking time.
-
Respect downtime: Breaks and sleep are essential. Hustling 24/7 is not sustainable.
Final Thoughts
“Study in the morning, freelance at night” might sound exhausting, but it works for me—because both sides feed different parts of who I am. One teaches me structure, discipline, and knowledge. The other fuels my creativity, independence, and future career.
If you’re a student thinking about freelancing, start small, stay organized, and be kind to yourself. You don’t have to be perfect—just consistent.
