What I Wish I Knew Before Starting My Side Hustle
But side hustles aren't as simple as “just start and everything will work out.” There are things I wish someone had told me, before I dove in headfirst and burned out (more than once).
1. You Don’t Have to Do Everything at Once
I thought I had to be on every platform, try every skill, say yes to every offer. I ended up stretched too thin, making very little progress anywhere.
What helped? Picking one thing and doing it well.
Start small. Get good. Then grow.
2. It Takes Time to Earn Real Money
I expected to start making serious cash fast. Reality check: most people don’t make hundreds in their first month.
What you earn at the beginning might be pocket money. But it adds up. The skills you build early on will pay off later — you just have to be patient.
3. Not All Clients Are Worth It
In the beginning, I said yes to everyone — even the ones who paid poorly or made my life harder than it needed to be.
Now I know: boundaries are necessary. Learn to recognize red flags early. Your time and energy are valuable.
4. You’ll Have to Figure Stuff Out Alone
There’s no one-size-fits-all roadmap. You’ll google a lot. You’ll mess up. You’ll learn as you go.
It’s frustrating — but it’s also part of what makes you stronger and more confident over time.
5. Your Hustle Doesn’t Define You
It’s easy to get wrapped up in productivity culture. If your side hustle slows down, it doesn’t mean you failed.
You’re more than your income, client count, or deliverables.
Show up, do your best, and make sure you’re still living your life — not just chasing to-do lists.
If you’re just getting started, I hope this saves you some stress. A side hustle can be empowering, but it’s also work. The good news? You’ll grow, learn, and figure it out — one gig at a time.
